G’day we are taking a little break here at the moment but will do our best to update reports as received during the next months. If you have a report on your trip to Mexico forward it to me at this email info@gofishaustralia.com and I will post it here. Look forward to the forums being reopened around Christmas time plus some video of 2008 Baja and Yucatan action to added then also. I’m going fishing now but I have posted some Tarpon action from this year in Isla Blanca below .
We are taking a little keyboard break!

Hi Folks,
I got some fun news! My good friend Lynn Boyd of Houston, Texas was fishing with me today, and we had some great action on smaller roosterfish, but Lynn decided at the start of the day that he wanted to fish only for big roosterfish (he had caught smaller ones the day before), so he passed up at least 200 shots at the smaller 10 lb. fish. It looked like he was going to have a skunked day. During the day, we kept chanting- our patience is going to pay off. It did, late in the day, when all looked bleak, a small school of giant roosterfish jumped on my teaser. It was nuts-crazy action. Thirty roosterfish and the smallest looked to be around 50#. Lynn made a cast and the fly landed long, and lined 5 huge roosterfish, but the 6th fish was in back (the smallest of course) and he ate the fly with Gusto! Fish on- I grabbed the second rod for a double, but quickly put the rod down- Lynn insists that I fish with him, but this was Lynn’s biggest roosterfish ever! He fought the fish for over 45 minutes and was having a hard time of it (he suffered a heart attach a few years ago), so he decided to take it easy and I finished the fish off. Wow, what a fish, He took at least 30 screaming runs during the fight. I finally brought him to boat and Alex netted him. The fish was at least 65#, just a monster! We quickly took some photos and released him unharmed. The fish swam away really strong. The fish was caught on a G. LOOMIS Crosscurrent 11wt, with an ABEL 4 reel. The fly Line was RIO Deep Sea 400 grains, and he was using a RIO 20# tippet, The cast and hook-up was IGFA, but when we switched the fighter, it became a non-IGFA catch. The fly was a “Charlie’s Angel”. Way to go Lynn!!! Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy!!!
Check out the action at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j32qtrwl_w
The fishing has been good for this last week, although there has been a good wind out of the south. The chop has made it a bit harder to fish, but the fish don’t seem to care.
Plenty of roosterfish to catch, and most of them are under 15 lbs. Great fun on fly and light tackle. The big ones are starting to show, and it’s about time! I expect Lynn to catch another HOG tomorrow!
The sierra are still here and they are mostly on the Pacific side- They are too much fun on fly rods, and top water poppers on light spinning rods.
Some Cubera and Colorado snappers around, we had shots at them today, but Lynn decided not to cast to them.
The offshore fishing continues to be good for Marlin. The marlin have been biting pretty good on baits and lures. The average catch is two fish to the boat. This has been an awesome striped marlin year, hope it lasts. I am getting spoiled!
Tuna and Dorado are mostly by-catch while marlin fishing. The offshore fishing will improve this month as the warm water moves in.
Tight Lines,
Grant

Air Temperature - 63 - 88
Weather - The weather this past week gave us a little of everything. We started out the week with calm seas and perfect fishing conditions. On Tuesday we saw slightly overcast skies and a fairly strong wind from the South, Southeast during the afternoon giving us some bumpy seas. On Wednesday (yesterday) the wind had shifted and was blowing out of the North creating very rough seas. This morning as I write this report the wind has died and the seas are back to being flat and inviting and we do not have a cloud in the sky. This is a beautiful time of year to fly fish in Baja.
Beach - The beach continues to be pretty good for those who are out fishing. The bait and the fish have been moving up and down the beaches so finding the bait and the fish was the trick. We still have good numbers of smaller Rooster fish and Jack Crevelle in the area. We also saw a few more Pompano and lady fish along the beaches as well. My friend Conway Bowman and his wife Michelle were here and Michelle caught a very nice Barred Jack out in Rincon yesterday as they were trying to hide from the wind. Over all if you spend some time on the beach you will get your shots it is just a matter of time.
Inshore - After a slower week for Bonita last week the fish bounced back in force and were once again providing some good action. We continue to see some large schools of Jack Crevelle hanging together that are not quite done with the spring spawn. The Crevelle that are done are starting to provide some nice action. We had some good action to the North for some quality size (15 - 30 lbs.) Rooster fish last week. These fish were located in the deeper water just off the beach and erupted when we offered a few sardines to them.
Off Shore - The good numbers of Marlin and Sail fish continued this past week. These fish are spread out all over the bay. We had a good number of fish that were found to our North in the area of the 88. I spent Tuesday with my client John Laurin looking for bill fish. we raised a couple of fish and John was able to present the fly to one and it eagerly took but after a jump and a head shake the fly came loose. John and I will be out their tomorrow trying once again. we have also seen a few Blue Marlin in the area as well. As far as the Dorado we have some very nice fish in the area. These fish have been on the larger size. I heard of an angler that was lucky enough to hook and land a Dorado of 73lbs. Over all the action is steady and with a little of everything in the area you have a good chance to find what ever you are looking for.

Hi Folks,
I just love the late spring in Cabo, you will be hard pressed to find a better fishery anywhere in the world! I don’t get much rest or sleep in May and June, all’s I can think about is fishing, and then when I get off the water, all my thoughts turn to the next days outing. It’s crazy, I have been doing this my entire life and it still drives me nuts. What a great life!
Wow, the inshore fishing continues to be really good. This spring is shaping up to be one of the best I have seen in Cabo.
Lots of fun exciting action on flies as well as spinning gear for roosterfish, jacks, sierra mackerel, yellowtail, and cubera snappers.
On top of that we are starting to catch some really big roosterfish, just ask Doug and Jamie Semlerd from Alexandria, Virginia. Doug caught roosterfish, sierra mackerel and cubera snappers and ended their day with a 50 pound plus roosterfish on light spinning tackle.
Lou Bevelaqua from Long Island New York had another great day with us, he caught a large variety of fish and also got a nice roosterfish over 40 lbs. This has to be at least his 12th giant roosterfish fishing with us over the years.
The offshore fishing has slowed down a bit. We are catching striped marlin, expect one to three fish on a days outing. Tossing live baits to tailers is the best bet.
The YF tuna have mostly left or either caught by the commercial fishing boats. You can catch 6 to 10 fish a day, but its not the crazy action we had a few weeks ago.
The dorado are mostly by catch while fishing for striped marlin and on the small side with most fish under 20 lbs.
Expect the striped marlin fishing to improve in the next few days, as mid May is prime time for the stripers.
Pictured below is Doug with his big roosterfish.

Hi Folks,
Wow, what a great fishing week. It’s been too much fun chasing the inshore species.
We have had great action and variety. One moment you have sierra mackerel chasing your fly, then next cast is a school of roosterfish, and then the next cast it’s a 30 lb cubera snapper. It just can’t get any better than this.
Ask Dan Dreyer from Payson, Az; Dan was out fly fishing the other day and caught 18 roosterfish, multiple jacks and sierra mackerel, and 4 cubera snappers, one pig was well over 30 lbs. Dan said, the action was non stop all day, and the big cubera made it the best day ever!
The offshore fishing has been mixed results, we had a few great days of yellowfin fishing, but the tuna boats decided that Cabo was its next fishing grounds, so for a week straight they were fishing within sight of the marina. Talk about being pissed, the whole fishing community was up in arms, but the Mexican Government considers Tuna to be a commercial fish, that means that the tuna boats can fish where they please.
The striped marlin fishing has been pretty consistent, with one to three fish a day on light tackle. The fish are pretty spread out all over the place, but we have been finding some big 150# plus fish close to shore, sometimes only ½ mile offshore.
The dorado are here and there and expect to catch a few small fish while trolling for marlin.
Camping trips- I will be adding camping trips up the Pacific. These are places I have fished over the last fifteen years, that get only a small amount of pressure from a few local fisherman. We will be going “outback”, with little or no contact with the outside world. Expect to catch snook, corbina’s, sea bass, snappers, and other fun inshore fish on the fly and spinning gear. I will also have some Kayaks for fooling around in the estuary’s. The trips will be 3 to 6 fishing days in length. The trips will be from September through the end of October. I will also be doing at least one Mag bay trip with guests. If you have any interest, please email me.
Most of you know that Gisel and I got into the Real Estate business a few years ago. We have been doing well with the strong market down here, and it’s been a lot of fun. If you have any interest in buying Real Estate in Los Cabos, the East Cape or Todos Santos area, please email me at info@baja-anglers.com
